Oat Milk

I love to make oat milk, it’s really easy and cheap to do. 1 litre of homemade milk costs me 15p to make and it can be even cheaper depending on how much you pay for your oats. I like to buy organic oats which cost me £1.45 for a kg bag.

The prep time is in reference to the mininum time required for the oats to soak.

Ingredients

  • 100g of Oats, I like to use Aldi organic oats you can use a cheaper option.

  • 2 Dates – I like to use Medjool, this is optional, you can use alternative sweeteners, for example, agave syrup or you can skip the sweetener

  • 800 – 900 ml of water

Directions

  • Soak a 100g of oats in a 1000ml of water for a minimum of 30 minutes. If you would prefer you can leave your oats soaking overnight.
  • Once your oats are soaked you will need to drain and discard the soaking water. Give the oats a really good rinse in a sieve until the water runs clear
  • Once the oats are rinsed transfer into the blender with 800-1000 ml of water. This is dependent on your preference for thickness. The less water added the thicker your milk will be. I like to add around 850ml as it gives me the perfect amount of milk for the 1-litre bottle.
  • Add your dates or sweetener to the blend.
Now blend, should only take a few minutes *** If you are using a high powered blender like a Vitamix be careful not to over mix. You don’t want your milk to become warm if it does you will end up with a slimy consistency. ***
  • Once blended tip into your nut bag and squeeze. This bit is messy but lots of fun. Keep Squeezing until you get all the liquid out.
  • Once done transfer into your bottle and store in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Notes

  • ** Save your oat pulp – It can be reused in another recipe or you could use it as a face mask. Oat pulp will keep in the fridge for 5-7 days, alternative you can freeze and save for another time.
  • ** You will get a natural separation when the milk is sitting in the fridge, as you do with your commercial brands. All you need to do is give a good shake before pouring.
  • ** Homemade oat milk does not work well when heater, it will thicken up. I like to use it for my morning breakfast, overnight oats or smoothies.
